WITHIN is a portrait of survival without spectacle.
She’s a breast cancer survivor rising from the water, reborn. Mastectomy scars cross her chest, and two clear glass jugs take their place, a double entendre that’s both blunt and tender. They’re see-through, distorted, and undeniably there.
The light in this painting is not coming from the outside. It comes from within her. She is the source.
And because my work is centered on hands as story, her hands are the proof: knurly joints, enlarged knuckles, and fingers that bend slightly beyond “normal” from treatment, still capable of tenderness and hold. A dragonfly rests on the glass as a symbol of transformation, while lilies bloom around her like a soft insistence that beauty can be rewritten..
